As many states, counties, cities and townships across the nation move towards reaching more sustainability with their environmental and recycling laws and ordinances, it’s overwhelming for an establishment to keep track of these ordinances, as well as staying in compliance of ever changing governmental mandates, commented Adi Andrews, Escalations and Sales Specialist, Waste Cost Solutions. In a state-by-state review, Andrews offers insight into recent ordinances and mandates.
Bottle Recycling in North Carolina...
North Carolina requires that any establishment in the state with either a liquor license or a beer and wine license be subjected to the disposal of discarded bottles in glass collection totes. The state also recommends the removal of recyclables or cardboard out of the MSW waste. The latter is not required, however it is recommended, and so many waste haulers in North Carolina now provide inexpensive OCC service, Andrews added. This is a rarity nowadays, since the recycling market has started to plummet.
Mandatory Recycling in Minnesota, Hawaii, Virginia
and New York City...
The state of Minnesota has mandatory state-wide recycling laws that require establishments to separate their recyclables. In late 2019, New York City adopted a similar recycling measure. The state of Hawaii promotes site recycling and will fine haulers if they bring too many recyclables within a trash container. The latter is also the case in parts of Virginia, where recyclables are still cheaper than regular MSW waste and contaminated loads are very expensive.
Strict Measures in California and Pennsylvania...
California requires establishments in the state to recycle at the very least OCC (Cardboard), however some counties in California require separate recycling by number in different containers. The latter is also mandated in some areas of Pennsylvania. In addition, some municipalities in California also require that organic and green lawn waste be collected in different containers. These municipalities will fine the hauler, who will then pass that fine down to an establishment especially if this becomes a repetitive issue, noted Andrews.
We promptly inform our clients of these changes and what is necessary for them to be compliant,” noted Andrews. “We also report to the municipalities what our individual clients are doing to become and stay in compliance,” Andrews added.
