Malibu, a beachside city in Southern California is renowned for its 21-mile strip of scenic views along the California Coast. With the Pacific Ocean on one side and the Santa Monica Mountains on the other, Malibu is the home of numerous state parks and beaches, including Malibu Creek State Park, Leo Carrillo State Beach Park, Zuma Beach and Surfrider Beach. The city with a population of over 12,000 residents and a 30-mile proximity to Los Angeles, is also the home of numerous A-List Hollywood celebrities and prominent members of the entertainment industry.
The city of Malibu was recently in the news for launching new mandatory organic waste recycling program for Malibu businesses and residents. The effort is to help reduce the carbon footprint in the area and to ultimately diminish the impact of climate change in the coastal community. The program also meets the mandatory requirements established under the recent California Senate Bill 1383.
Organic waste, including food scraps, currently makes up more than 50% of what California residents send to the landfills. The abundance of food waste in the landfills releases large amounts of greenhouse gases, including methane, which contribute to climate change.
Malibu Mayor Paul Grisanti notes the threat of rising sea levels and wildfires caused by climate change to the Pacific Coast community. The Malibu and statewide initiative is to ultimately reduce the amount of methane in the environment by diverting organic waste from landfills. Encouraging edible food rescue and expanding the composting and waste-to-energy digestion of organic waste are two components of the initiative.

Malibu residential dwellings with five units or more must start organic recycling or have an approved exemption waiver by October 2021. Commercial edible food generators in the community are required to participate in an edible food recovery program. Malibu grocery stores must also participate in an edible food recovery program by 2022. In addition, Malibu restaurants greater than 5,000 square feet and large events with more than 2,000 attendees per day must participate in a food recovery program by 2024
Residents in Malibu will automatically receive organic waste recycling service starting on January 1, 2022. They will be responsible for sorting organics in the appropriate cart based on their City-permitted solid waste hauler. The haulers will provide specific information on how they will collect organics and which cart residents should use for these organics.
